Edun FC Win Inaugural Adam Akanbi Memorial Unity Cup as AVM Lanre Ibrahim Honours Late Father
Edun Football Club have emerged champions of the maiden Alhaji Adam Olohuntoyin Akanbi Memorial Unity Cup, defeating Isalekoto Football Club 1–0 in a keenly contested final at the Kwara Football Academy Pitch, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.
The final, played on Wednesday, ended goalless in the first half, with both teams displaying impressive football artistry and determination in their bid to lift the inaugural trophy.
The decisive moment came in the second half when tournament top scorer, Habeebullahi Jamoodo, found the back of the net to hand Edun FC the historic victory.
Speaking shortly after the final, the tournament sponsor, AVM Oluwatoyin Lanre Ibrahim (Rtd.), commended all participating teams for their sportsmanship, discipline and competitive spirit throughout the championship.
AVM Ibrahim said the tournament was organised in memory of his late father, Alhaji Adam Olohuntoyin Akanbi, who passed away 19 years ago, describing the competition as a fitting tribute to his father’s legacy and a platform to promote unity, peace and community development.
He announced that the tournament would become an annual event as part of his pet project, adding that its objectives of fostering love, unity, peace and community development through sports had been achieved.
The retired Air Vice Marshal also appreciated his siblings and other relatives for their unwavering support towards the successful staging of the competition, promising that subsequent editions would be bigger and better.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of the Ilorin Emirate Durbar Committee, Engr. Yahaya Alapansanpa, commended AVM Lanre Ibrahim for investing his resources in sports development through the community-based football tournament.
He said the competition had lived up to expectations, particularly with the impressive turnout of spectators and dignitaries at the grand finale.
Also speaking, retired AIG Baba Adisa Bolanta urged youths to remain focused and determined in pursuing their careers, stressing that discipline, commitment and hard work were essential to maximising their potential.
The colourful grand finale attracted traditional rulers and prominent personalities from the Ilorin Emirate, including the Alangua of Oke-Ogun, Ajia Ijesha, Daudu Akanni and Daudu Ayipo.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Prince Modibo Zulu Gambari, General Agbabiaka (Rtd.), former Secretary to the Kwara State Government Alhaji Gold, and the National President of the Ilorin Emirate Youth Development Association (IEYDA), Alhaji Mohammed Usman Jagunmo.
The championship was themed: “Unity, Peace and Community Development through Sports.”
In recognition of his contribution to community development and grassroots football, AVM Oluwatoyin Lanre Ibrahim (Rtd.) was also honoured by the Oke Ogun Ward Community Development Association and Abdul Momoh Photography for his selfless service to the community and sustained investment in the promotion of football, particularly at the grassroots.
