Kwara Sports Festival: Where Are the Local Government Chairmen and ALGON?

It is no longer news that the 8th Kwara State Sports Festival has commenced, following a colourful opening ceremony held on Saturday at the George Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin. More than 700 athletes representing the 16 Local Government Areas of the state have converged to compete for honours while showcasing their talents, culture and sporting potential.

However, beneath the excitement of the festival is a concern that deserves urgent attention: the conspicuous absence of several Local Government Chairmen and the leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) from the opening ceremony.

An event designed primarily to discover, nurture and celebrate grassroots talents ought to command the active presence and support of the political leadership at the local government level. Sadly, only the Chairmen of Ilorin West, Isin and Edu Local Government Areas, alongside a representative of Ilorin East, were reportedly present at the opening ceremony.

This is not merely a question of physical presence. It raises a broader concern about the level of commitment and ownership being demonstrated by the local government authorities towards the athletes representing their respective councils.

The athletes are not competing for themselves alone. They are representing their communities, their Local Government Areas and, ultimately, Kwara State. For many of these young athletes, the presence of their Local Government Chairmen at the stadium would be a powerful source of motivation and encouragement.

The absence of the ALGON leadership is even more concerning. As the umbrella body of the Local Government Areas, ALGON should be at the forefront of galvanising the councils to actively participate in an event that is fundamentally about grassroots development.

The Kwara State Government, under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has demonstrated considerable commitment to sports development through investments in sporting facilities, equipment and programmes, as well as the prompt release of funds to facilitate effective participation in the festival.

It therefore becomes imperative for the Local Government Councils and ALGON to complement these efforts by taking ownership of the grassroots component of sports development.

Government investment in sports cannot achieve its full potential without corresponding commitment from the local governments. The councils are closer to the people and are strategically positioned to identify young talents, encourage them, provide mentorship and create opportunities for them to progress from grassroots competitions to state, national and international levels.

The sports festival should therefore not be viewed simply as a week-long competition where athletes arrive, compete and depart. It should be seen as a talent-development platform and an opportunity for Local Government Chairmen to connect directly with the young people who may become the state's next generation of sporting stars.

There is still time to change the narrative.

The Local Government Chairmen should make deliberate efforts to visit the competition venues, interact with their athletes, offer words of encouragement and, where possible, provide additional support and motivation. Such gestures may appear simple, but they can leave a lasting impression on young athletes who are striving to make their communities proud.

The Governor AbdulRazaq administration has, in recent years, changed the landscape of sports infrastructure in Kwara through the improvement and upgrading of sporting facilities across the three senatorial districts. The ongoing sports festival provides another opportunity to consolidate these gains by strengthening the connection between state-level investment and grassroots participation.

Kwara has the opportunity to build a sustainable sports ecosystem in which government, Local Government Councils, the private sector, sports administrators and communities work together to discover and nurture talent.

For this to happen, however, the Local Government Councils and ALGON must not remain on the sidelines.

The 8th Kwara State Sports Festival belongs to the athletes, but it is also a collective responsibility. The young men and women representing the 16 Local Government Areas deserve to see their leaders standing behind them.

ALGON and the Local Government Chairmen must rise to the occasion, embrace the festival and demonstrate, through their presence and actions, that grassroots sports development is not merely a slogan but a shared commitment.
