Kwara Sports Festival Closing Ceremony Holds Saturday In Ilorin


The 8th Kwara State Sports Festival will climax on Saturday at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl, George Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin, with the closing ceremony scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

The week-long multi-sport event has lived up to expectations, providing a platform for the discovery of promising talents across the 16 Local Government Areas of Kwara State.

Speaking ahead of the closing ceremony, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Mallam Bola Mogaji, expressed satisfaction with the successful staging of the festival.

Mogaji said he was fulfilled to have delivered another edition of the state sports festival, describing the discovery of new talents as one of the major highlights of the competition.

He commended the Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his support and magnanimity in approving the hosting of the festival, noting that the Governor's unwavering commitment to sports development has contributed significantly to the progress recorded in the sector.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr. Steve Olarinoye, said the closing ceremony is expected to attract Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Local Government Chairmen, the leadership of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), sports administrators and other dignitaries.

According to him, the closing programme will also feature the final events in athletics as athletes from the various local government areas battle for honours and valuable points.

Meanwhile, the race for overall supremacy remains keenly contested, with Ilorin West Local Government currently occupying the top position on the medal table.

Asa Local Government is in second position, while Ifelodun Local Government occupies third place. Ilorin East, Oyun and Offa Local Governments complete the top six.

With the final athletics events still to be concluded, attention will now shift to Saturday's closing ceremony as the 16 participating Local Government Areas battle for overall honours in the 8th edition of the Kwara State Sports Festival.

Meet Ilorin-born Soliu Ajia Yakubu,Flying Eagles Goalkeeper for AFCON  An Ilorin-born goalkeeper, Soliu Ajia Yakubu, will wear the Nigerian badge at the upcoming U20 AFCON tournament in Egypt. The former Gidado Football Academy player was part of the squad listed for the AFCON final list by Coach Aliyu Zubairu. Soliu currently ply his trade in Serbian league with FK Novia Pazar.
