Kwara Sports Festival Begins With Torch of Unity, Flags Hoisting


The 8th Kwara State Sports Festival has officially commenced at the George Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin, with the lighting of the Torch of Unity, a symbolic flame signifying peace, solidarity and sportsmanship among participating athletes.

The Torch of Unity was rotated among the captains and representatives of the 16 participating Local Government Areas, while the unveiling of the sports mascot was also accompanied by the hoisting of flags of the participating councils.

Speaking at the Torch of Unity ceremony, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Coach Bolakale Adisa Mogaji, described the festival as a “mini Olympics” designed to discover and showcase sporting talents across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.

Coach Mogaji said the festival would demonstrate that sporting talents are not concentrated in Kwara Central alone, stressing that the state has promising athletes across its three senatorial districts.

He commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the comprehensive renovation of the George Innih Stadium Complex, which he said had provided a befitting environment for the hosting of the tournament.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Steve Olarinoye, outlined the activities lined up for the festival, including the Torch of Unity, the opening ceremony and the commencement of sporting events.

Dr Olarinoye said a major objective of the festival is to identify and harvest the best athletes from the participating Local Government Areas for further development.

Meanwhile, the official opening ceremony of the 8th Kwara State Sports Festival is scheduled to hold tomorrow, Saturday, August 22, at the George Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
