Kwara FA Congress passes vote of confidence on Thuraya, approves Local Football Council elections
The Congress of the Kwara State Football Association (KWSFA) has passed a unanimous vote of confidence on the leadership of the association under its Chairman, Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya, while approving August 25, 2026, for elections into the 16 Local Football Councils across the state.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the KWSFA Congress held at the Football House, Ilorin, today, Saturday July 18, 2026.
The Congress commended the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, CON, for his administration's continued investment in sports infrastructure, particularly the upgrading and rehabilitation of facilities at the Rashidi Yekini Main-Bowl of the George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin.
According to the Congress, the improved facilities have significantly enhanced Kwara State's capacity to host major football competitions and other sporting events, thereby contributing to the growth and development of football in the state.
Delegates also expressed confidence in the current KWSFA Board led by Mallam Idris Abdullahi Musa Thuraya, citing its proactive, transparent and progressive approach to football administration.
The Congress praised the Board's efforts in grassroots football development, partnership building, sponsorship attraction and initiatives aimed at raising the profile of football in Kwara State.
As part of preparations for the forthcoming state football elections, Congress approved the Board's proposal to conduct elections into the 16 Local Football Councils on August 25, 2026.
It further directed all affiliated bodies and associations to conduct their respective elections in line with the provisions of the KWSFA Statutes and other relevant regulations ahead of elections into the State Football Association Board.
The Congress also called on the Kwara State Sports Commission to introduce subsidised rates, concessions and waivers for football clubs using sports facilities within the state. Delegates noted that such measures would reduce operational costs, strengthen club development and encourage wider participation in football activities.
In recognition of private sector support for football development, the Congress lauded Engr. Femi Sanni Araba and the management of Stefolga Group and FlowFM for sponsoring the Kwara State Federation Cup.
Delegates described the three-year sponsorship agreement as a landmark intervention capable of boosting the growth and sustainability of the state's oldest football competition.
Furthermore, the Congress appealed to the Kwara State government to establish special intervention programmes for football clubs representing the state in national and international competitions.
It also advocated incentives, grants and other forms of support for privately owned football clubs, stressing that similar initiatives have produced positive outcomes in several states across the country.
Reaffirming its commitment to the advancement of football, the Congress pledged continued support for programmes, partnerships and initiatives aimed at talent discovery, improved football administration and the positioning of Kwara State as one of Nigeria's leading football hubs.
The communiqué was adopted at the end of the Congress and signed by Ahmed Abdullah, Secretary of the Communiqué Drafting Committee.
