NLO Playoff: Yewa FA Rejects Injury Claims as FC Ebedei Walk Off Pitch in Akure
Reports from the Nationwide League One (NLO) playoff match between FC Ebedei and Yewa FA in Akure have contradicted claims circulating on social media regarding the circumstances surrounding the abandonment of the encounter.
According to the official referee's report, the match kicked off at 11:00 a.m. and progressed normally until the 40th minute when an injury occurred involving Yewa FA goalkeeper, Olalere Ridwan. The goalkeeper received immediate medical attention on the pitch following a collision during play.
The report further stated that at the 45th minute, FC Ebedei, listed as the home team, left the field of play and subsequently refused to continue the match. Match officials reportedly waited for the mandatory 15-minute period stipulated by the regulations, but FC Ebedei failed to return to the pitch. Consequently, the referee called off the game with the scoreline standing at 0-0.
In a statement issued after the incident, Yewa FA dismissed suggestions that the match was abandoned because of the goalkeeper's injury
"Contrary to reports making round, the game was not abandoned due to a collision between our goalkeeper and an FC Ebedei player. Our second-choice goalkeeper had already been cleared by the Reserve Referee to replace the injured keeper and the game was ready to continue
Therefore, the narrative that the match was abandoned for that reason is false. FC Ebedei simply walked off the pitch for no reason."
Witness present at the venue also confirmed that preparations had been made for the match to resume after medical attention was administered to the injured goalkeeper. The official match report and eyewitness accounts indicate that the abandonment resulted from FC Ebedei's decision to leave the field and decline to continue the game rather than from the injury incident itself.
