Kwara United Edge Sporting Supreme U-19 on Penalties to Reach Federation Cup Round of 32

The defending champions of the President Federation Cup, Kwara United, have secured a place in the Round of 32 after defeating Sporting Supreme U-19 of Abuja 4-2 on penalties at the Prince Abubakar Audu University Stadium, Anyigba, Kogi State.

The Harmony Boys fought back from behind to earn a 2-2 draw in regulation time before prevailing in the shootout. Sporting Supreme took advantage of their attacking urgency and aggression to score twice in the first half, finding the net in the 24th and 37th minutes.

Kwara United had earlier thought they had opened the scoring through Salisu Mustapha, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Sporting Supreme later capitalized on a counterattack to head into the break with the advantage.

Coach Ashifat Suleiman made decisive tactical substitutions at halftime, introducing Junior Aimufua and Philip Ozor, and both players made immediate impact. Aimufua reduced the deficit in the 50th minute before Ozor restored parity in the 62nd minute.

Babatunde Bright and Shola Abdulraheem both had opportunities to win the game in regulation time, but the Sporting Supreme goalkeeper produced crucial saves to keep the scores level at 2-2.

The match proceeded directly to penalties, where Kwara United converted all of their spot-kicks, while Sporting Supreme missed two attempts, handing the defending champions a 4-2 victory in the shootout.

Speaking after the game, Coach Ashifat Suleiman praised his players for their resilience and fighting spirit, noting that the team will continue to improve as the competition progresses. He added that the players demonstrated the character of true champions by overcoming the determined Abuja-based youngsters.

Attention now shifts to Kwara United’s final NPFL game of the season away to Bayelsa United in Yenagoa on Sunday, while the club awaits the draw for the Round of 32 of the President Federation Cup.
