Edel FC GM Chukwuebuka Targets NPFL Promotion Next Season, Promises More European Opportunities for Players
General Manager of Edel FC, Micheal Chukwuebuka, has revealed that the club will shift focus towards fighting for promotion next season after successfully retaining their status in the Nigeria National League.
Speaking with journalists in Ikenne during the ongoing NNL Super Four, Chukwuebuka admitted that the just-concluded campaign was one of the toughest in the club’s history as they battled relegation in the season.
According to him, football remains a difficult venture with numerous challenges, but he praised the players for their determination from the beginning to the end of the season.
“Nothing is easy in football. There are a lot of challenges that come with every football season. Our boys tried their best and we thank God for retaining our status in the NNL because it was not easy. We fought relegation and it was a pretty different season for us,” he said.
The Edel FC boss, however, disclosed that the club’s ambition for next season goes beyond survival, revealing that club owner Chude Edel has charged the team to pursue promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League.
“Every season we try to build on what we achieved previously. The owner of the club told us we have to be more ambitious next season. It should not just be about retaining our place in the NNL, but going a step further to fight for promotion. We have seen private clubs gain promotion, so why can’t we do the same?” he added.
Chukwuebuka also highlighted the club’s commitment to youth development, revealing that two Edel FC players secured moves to Europe during the season.
He further disclosed that the club recently organized a one-week scouting tournament in Enugu aimed at helping more young talents secure direct contracts abroad.
“Players selected from the scouting programme will move straight to Europe on contracts and not for trials. By summer, we expect another five or six players to move to Europe,” he stated.
The Edel FC general manager also commended the Nigeria National League and its partners for successfully organizing the Super Four tournament, describing the competition as a huge success.
