Breaking: Kwara United Escape Relegation
Kwara United suffered a disappointing 4-0 defeat to Bayelsa United in their final game of the Nigeria Premier Football League season played on Sunday at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
The Harmony Boys held their hosts to a goalless draw in the first half despite the waterlogged pitch caused by persistent rainfall and looked hopeful of finishing strongly after the break.
However, the game turned around immediately after restart as Bayelsa United opened scoring in the 47th minute.
Kwara United had the opportunity to pull one back in the 50th minute after Junior Aimufua was brought down inside the penalty area, prompting the centre referee to award a penalty. Unfortunately, Jimoh Gbadamosi’s spot kick was brilliantly saved by the Bayelsa goalkeeper.
Bayelsa United capitalised on the momentum and extended their lead with additional goals in the 60th, 66th and 72nd minutes respectively to hand the Harmony Boys a heavy defeat.
Despite the loss, Kwara United successfully escaped relegation after Bendel Insurance forced Remo Stars to a 1-1 draw. Kwara United survived on goal difference with minus four, while Remo Stars finished with minus five.
Meanwhile, tension erupted after the match as players and officials of Kwara United were reportedly held hostage by former players, Anthony Obaluwa and Blessing Okadi, over claims of unpaid debts allegedly owed by the club despite the Kwara State Government had cleared outstanding debts before the commencement of the season.
The intervention of security operatives, including the police, helped to calm the situation, although the team bus was reportedly seized and one of its tyres deflated during the incident.
Kwara United eventually ended the season in 16th position on the NPFL table.
