Opanuga Lauds Talent Pool at ASM Scouting Tournament
President of SGFC Athletics and programme coordinator, Mr. Richard Opanuga, has expressed satisfaction with the level of talent and organisation at the ongoing ASM Scouting Tournament, describing the event as “meeting expectations” and producing standout performances from day one.

Speaking on Tuesday (Day Two of the programme) after observing the early rounds of matches, Opanuga noted that several players have already caught the attention of scouts, particularly from the opening fixtures.

“So many players, especially on day one, performed well. Today, the level of play has become even more intense and there’s more sensitivity in the way the games are being approached. So far, so good,” he said.

According to him, five to six notable prospects have already been identified, but scouts will continue to assess consistency, agility, and how well players connect their performances across multiple matches.

“The scouts want to see consistency—how agile they are and how they connect their matches. Talent is one thing, but being able to sustain it is what matters,” he added.

Opanuga also praised the work of Victor Ogunsanya, whom he described as a long-time figure in sports development with over a decade of experience in the United States.

“I’ve known Ogunsanya for over a decade. This is what he does in the United States, and we brought him to Nigeria to help harmonise players and put them on the right career path,” he stated.

He further revealed that players can look forward to continuous opportunities, with two scouting programmes expected annually, aligning with the January and July transfer windows.

“They are promising two scouting programmes every year to fit both windows. We trust they can do it, they are up to the task. Victor Ogunsanya will deliver with his crew,” he concluded.
