Niger Sports Commission dissolves Basketball association management, appoints caretaker committee

The Niger State Sports Commission (NSSC) has dissolved the leadership of the state Basketball Association following an internal crisis that has hindered the development of the sport in the state.
Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Danjuma Abdul Masu, announced the dissolution while briefing sports journalists at the Commission’s headquarters in Minna on Monday evening.
He explained that the decision was reached after a stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday, 2nd November, 2025, where issues bordering on alleged corruption, indiscipline, and disunity among the technical crew were extensively deliberated upon.
According to him, the Commission, after further consultations resolved to dissolve the association and set up a three-month caretaker committee to manage basketball activities in the state.
The committee, which will serve as a steering body pending fresh reorganization, is headed by an America base and former Niger Potters player, Isah Umar, who will serve as the Sole Administrator, Jonathan Kolo was named Vice Sole Administrator, Aliyu Abubakar is to serve as General Manager, while Umar Nasidi will continue as Secretary of the association.
Hon. Masu noted that the move became necessary to restore sanity, transparency, and cohesion within the basketball structure in Niger State, following recurring crises and the suspension of the head coach over disciplinary issues.
He also disclosed that Niger State has secured the hosting rights for the Division 1 National League scheduled for November 26. "The Savannah Conference will hold in Minna, while the Atlantic Conference will take place in Osogbo," he added.
According to the Commission Chairman, the newly appointed administration has already begun restructuring efforts, including the recruitment of five experienced players from the Nigerian Basketball League to strengthen the home-based squad.
Additionally, new gym facility have been upgraded with tarazo flooring and modern lighting, while a new basketball upright donated by one of the steering committee member is expected to arrive in two weeks.
The Chairman expressed optimism that the reforms and renewed commitment under the caretaker team would reposition Niger Basketball for greater success at both state and national levels. He also reiterated the commitment of the commission to reorganize the sports sector in the state.
