10-Man ABS Ilorin FC Beat Sokoto United

Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC began their 2025/2026 Nigeria National League campaign on a winning note, securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over visiting Sokoto United on Saturday at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin, Kwara State.

It was a nervy and tense encounter that saw midfielder Ayokun Abdulrahman sent off in the 38th minute after receiving two yellow cards.

Despite going a man down, the Saraki Boys continued to dominate and nearly took the lead when Boluwatife Ajina picked out David Shedrack inside the penalty area. Shedrack fired at goal, but the Sokoto United goalkeeper reacted quickly to parry the effort away for a corner.

The first half ended goalless.

ABS FC returned for the second half with renewed determination and resilience, taking charge and creating several goal-scoring opportunities. Their breakthrough finally came in the 60th minute when Jamiu Sa’ad rose highest to head home the opener after a perfect delivery from David Shedrack, sending the home fans into wild jubilation.

Ajina thought he had doubled the lead minutes later, but his effort was ruled out for offside by Assistant Referee 1.

Sokoto United mounted a late threat as they pushed for an equaliser, but goalkeeper Shakiru Lawal stood firm, producing brilliant saves repeatedly to deny the visitors and preserve ABS’s lead.

Reacting to the victory, coach Yusuf Salihu praised his players for their resilience.

"I want to thank the management for giving us everything necessary for this game. It was a really tense match from the 38th minute, but I appreciate my players for their determination and resilience to win. It’s not easy, the first game of the season  but I thank them for the fight.”

Goalkeeper Shakiru Lawal was named the Jenik Player of the Match following his heroic performance. The award was presented by the CEO of Jenik Logistics, Mr. Nonso Okoh.

ABS FC will host Basira FC next weekend in their second home game of the season.
