Seyi Tinubu Cityzens Cup to discover new football stars for Nigeria
The organisers of the Seyi Tinubu Cityzens Cup have revealed that the maiden editon of the football tournament will help unearth new football stars for Nigeria.
This was disclosed at the press conference which was held in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara State on Thursday ahead of the commencement of the tournament.
Speaking to journalists, the convener of the Seyi Tinubu Cityzens Cup,Bello Aliu Olalekan, stated that the competition will provide adequate opportunity for emerging football talents to showcase their skills.
He noted that the tournament which aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, will foster unity in the communities.
Aliu stated that the project, is a vision of the Son of the President, Seyi Tinubu who seeks to leverage the game to help talented footballers realise their aspirations and dreams.
"The man whose vision unites us today is that of my principal, Mr. Seyi Tinubu who didn't just see a football tournament but a platform and stage for young Nigerians to rise".
"Through this competition, hidden talents that may have remain unnoticed now have a stage to shine" he added.
Aliu who thanked Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State for his commitment to youth empowerment, disclosed that the tournament will feature a total number of 16 teams with 15 players representing each team.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Coach Bola Mogaji commended the organisers of the tournament and urged all the participants to maximise the opportunity.
Mogaji also urged the officials of the game to ensure fair play and admonished all the teams to shun the idea of winning at all cost.
Also speaking at the well attended event, the Commissioner for Social Development in Kwara State, Dr. Mariam Nnafatima Imam lauded the organisers for finding Kwara State worthy as one of the states of the Federation where the competition is being held.
The competition which takes a knockout format will run from April 12 to 19 in strategic locations across Kwara State, thus fulfilling its objective of a community-driven project.
While the first round of the game will be held at Budooke primary school at Eiyenkorin in Asa local government area of Kwara State, the quarterfinals will be held at Karuma Secondary schools in Ilorin East local government while the semifinal games are expected to be held at Kwara Football Academy in Ilorin.
The final of the tournament has also been scheduled to be hold at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the George Innih Stadium in Ilorin with top dignitaries expected to grace the event.
The organisers also revealed that fantastic prizes will be awarded to all the winners at the end of the tournament.
The press conference also witnessed the unveiling of jerseys to be used by all the teams in the tournament.
