As the Kwara State/FA Sport Showcasing Programme prepares to kick off from July 16-18, 2024, at the Kwara State Stadium Complex in Ilorin, the representative of FA Sport, Mr. Ayodeji Adegbenro, has urged club to prioritize young talent.
Speaking at a meeting with the club's representatives on Wednesday in Ilorin, Adegbenro stressed that the programme's success hinges on identifying talented young players, rather than focusing on immediate transfer targets. He emphasized that FA Sport has a proven track record of representing top young players, including Chelsea's Levi Colwill, and is eager to discover more gems in the Kwara State talent pool.
Adegbenro encouraged clubs to present teams with top talented young players, even if it means selecting only eleven solid players. He reiterated that the programme's aim is to create opportunities for players, following the success of Taiwo Awoniyi, who has started his own academy and created employment opportunities.
The three-day event will feature fourteen teams, with six to seven European scouts in attendance. Adegbenro emphasized that the programme's success will be measured by the number of talented players identified, rather than the tournament's results.
With the Kwara State government and FA Sport investing in the programme, the emphasis is on human capacity development and creating opportunities for young players to shine. Club representatives were urged to take this opportunity seriously and present their best young talents for selection.
The stage is set for an exciting showcase of young talent in Ilorin, and only time will tell if the next Taiwo Awoniyi will be discovered in Kwara State.
