Wazbak Queens Emerges Winner of Maiden Ibidoyin Aina's Cup
It was all excitement and display of female soccer artistry at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium Surulere Lagos on Saturday, May 18, as Wazbak Queens emerged as the winner of the inaugural edition of the Bedouin Aina Cup 2024.
The one-day tournament involving four top female sides representing different regions in the state, saw Wazbak Queens defeat Papa Queens in the final match 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 0-0 at regulation time.
Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens walloped Phoenix Queens 3-0 in the third-place final to cart away the bronze medal.
Earlier, Wazbak Queens had piped Prince Kazeem Eletu Queens 1-0 to reach the final while Papa Queens also defeated FC Phoenix Queens by the same goal margin of 1-0 to set up a final clash.
The competition, amongst other things, also serves as a commemoration of the birthday of Lawyer cum female football enthusiast, Ibidoyin Aina who is a member of the female football committee in the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA).
It attracted important dignitaries from different walks of life including the LSFA boss, Hajj Liameed Gafar amongst others, while it also climaxed with the presentation of medals and awards to outstanding players.
While Odebode Omolara of Papa Queens won the Most Valuable Player award, Kehinde Alimot of Wazbak Queens was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament as Oladungbewo Taiwo scooped the highest goalscorer award. Wasiu Adekola of Wazbak Queens emerged as the best coach of the tournament.
Expected to be an annual event, the tournament is conceived to celebrate and support girl child and female football in Nigeria.
It is the brainchild of Ibidoyin Aina, a prominent legal practitioner, and former footballer, who has decided to use this competition as an opportunity to give back to society.
The tournament was organized by The Bulls Sports Limited and ManuelKing Sports Marketing Limited. The event had sponsors such as Olukayode Aina & Co. and partners which include Inspire Marketing and Branding Limited, Gorah Health Care, and LSFA amongst others.
