'Champion Coach' : How Isiaka Gambari changed the fortunes of Unilorin Warriors 


The history of football in the University of Ilorin will not be completed without telling the impacts of Coach Baba Isiaka Gambari.

Gambari, a thoroughly home grown Coach who changed the fortunes of the Unilorin football team with his magic wand has etched his name in the history book.

Named the Head Coach of Unilorin Warriors in 2018, Coach Gambari immediately get to work and explored all the available opportunity within the University community to build a team that would later be reckoned with. 

With his dedication and commitment,  he combed through the University community and rally round talented footballers. While it seemed odd for many students to combine football with Academics, Coach Gambari's infectious work ethics endeared him to many of them and attracted them into the team.

His knack for merit also stands him out. Coach Gambari doesn't give room to mediocrity and he places emphasis on quality and competence. He also came highly recommended for the job due to his rich profile, experience and charisma. 

The results of his hardwork was quickly felt within the University community when he led the institution to winning Silver medal in the 2018 JAMB Tertiary Institution Tournament.

While the Unilorites are still basking in the euphoria of the JAMB success, he also tinkered with the team to scoop Bronze medal in the second edition of Higher Institution Football League(HIFL) in 2019. In total, he has led the team to 3  out of the HIFL Super 4 in all the editions. 

He also led the Unilorin warriors to winning  gold in the 2019 JAMB Tertiary Institution Tournament. By this time, the image of the most 'sought after University' in football has risen beyond many people's imagination. The University is now living up to its motto of the 'Better by far" indeed. 

The icing on the cake was winning football gold medal in the Nigerian University Games Association(NUGA) in 2022 in Lagos. That football is the king of all sports, Unilorin left Lagos with their head high. 

His exceptional qualities as a Coach has definitely changed the fortunes of the University of Ilorin  football for good and one can only wish him more successes as he leads the team to more triumphs.

Recall that Coach Aliyu Zubairu, the Technical Adviser of Elkanemi Warriors of Maiduguri will lead the U20 team to the AFCON in Egypt.
